The Guest Suite
There is one guest suite for one couple only. No children.

Our focus is on the details so you can relax. All our food is made from scratch from staple ingredients. We grow our own eggs, a lot of fruit, vegetables, herbs and nuts and make just about everything from the bread and crackers to the jams and pickles. Combined with excellent local produce guests are assured a tasty start and finish to their day. As well as five star accommodation we offer meals ranging from casual platters to share to five course gourmet experiences. Many dietary requirements can be catered for with prior notice.
Late Check outs
Late check outs mean less alarm clock more body clock. Being just over an hour from Christchurch less travel means more time at your destination. The message received frequently from our guests and travellers is that they wish they had stayed longer. Our “normal” check out time is 11 a.m. and later check outs may be available.

In the event of a cancellation we will endeavour to rebook the room to avoid any penalty. We will do our best to accommodate date changes by rebooking.
Cancellations prior to 28 days will be deducted a $50 management fee and any bank or other charges incurred.
Cancellation between 28 days & 7 days prior to the booking will be deducted 25% of the total booking.
No shows will be 100% non refundable.
Cancellations between 7 days and the day of the booking will forfeit 100% of the booking or part thereof at management discretion.
Matua Gardens Retreat reserves the right to charge the guest for cleaning charges for excessive soiling, cost of repairs to damage to the fabric of the retreat, replacement or repair of fixtures and fittings and for any labour costs and management time incurred in carrying out or arranging for such repairs and or replacements and for any bookings lost as a result of such repairs. Charge may be made to the guest’s credit card or by invoice.

Where is Matua Gardens Retreat?
Matua Gardens Retreat is at 15 Kingstons Hill Rd in Robinsons Bay just over 1 km from SH75. Robinsons Bay is between Duvauchelle and Takamatua on Akaroa Harbour, Banks Peninsula. It is in a rural setting between two “no exit” roads i.e. not on a through route. Look for the sign on the Kingstons Hill Rd sign. It is approxiately 75km from Christchurch city.
How far is it from the airport?
CHC is about 75 minutes drive depending on traffic. Allow a bit longer when planning the return journey especially if you have a rental car to return.
How far is it from Akaroa?
10 minutes drive.
How far is the beach?
How can we get there?
Rental car from CHC airport, shuttle bus from Christchurch city, custom transfers by limo or taxi or we can arrange transport for you.
How long will it take to drive from Mt Cook?
About 5 hours if you don’t stop very much. We suggest you do to enjoy the scenery. Allow 6 hours.
Where should we stop on the way? If you take SH75 from ChCh city or the airport The Store at Tai Tapu does great food and coffee and has in interesting range of Kiwiana gifts. An alternative is to head to The Tannery at Woolston, take the Lyttleton tunnel to Governors Bay and stop at She Universe Chocolates and Cafe, head accross Gebbies Pass back to SH75 at Motukarara. Birdlings Flat is a small beachside community on the wild gravel beach where semi precious gemstones can sometimes be found. There is a rock and fossil museum. Little River Gallery & Cafe do great food, always have interesting exhibitions and wonderful Kiwi artisan works. The Hilltop Cafe boasts superb harbour views inside and out.

No. The things that make this a great place for adults make it hazardous for children.

Only one. There is a super king bed or twin beds. Please specify on booking.
Is the lounge shared with the hosts?
No. The lounge/dining area, the car park, the deck, the en-suite and bedroom are all guest only.

That’s ok we have outdoor lighting, gate lights and a nightlight.

Yes. Whenever you make it available.

Yes however reception can be variable. We can lend you a landline if necessary.
Is there a TV?
No but if you can tear yourself away from the view you can watch TV on demand on the large screen computer which will also play DVDs.

What time would you like it? If you are staying another night breakfast can be brunch as late as 11.30 am.
Can we have dinner at Matua Gardens Retreat?
Yes. Please let me know when you book. We can do platters, 2, 3, 4 and 5 courses.
What time do restaurants close?
It depends on the time of year. If you would like to eat out it is a good idea to make a reservation. We can do this for you.
Can you make a special cake or dessert for our celebration?
I am a vegetarian. Can you cater for me?
Absolutely we can.
Can you cater for gluten free, dairy free etc?
You need to let us know when you book in as some products are not available locally and we need to get them in especially for you.
Do you put flowers in the room?
Yes unless you tell us not to.
I have allergies. Can I trust you will look after me?

Harbour nature and sightseeing cruises, galleries, dolphin swimming, restaurants, Barrys Bay Cheese, museums, cafes, kayaking, golf, mini-golf, wine tasting, walking/hiking, farm tours, motorbike and sidecar tours, back tracks tours, penguin and seal colony tours, geology, photography, history, bird watching.
Matua Gardens Retreat: At Matua Gardens Retreat we specialise in rest and relaxation, good food and wine, and ecology and conservation. Birdwatching, massage therapies (pre-booking essential) walks and tours, and special dinners are all available on site. Our “garden” is a mixture of regenerating bush and woodland with orchard and vegetable gardens.
I want to walk the Banks Peninsula Track. Can I leave my other luggage with you?
Yes and we can drop you off and collect you after your walk.

What time does it get dark?
It depends on the time of year. It gets dark in summer much later than most of Australia. Sunset is well after 9pm mid summer and we have a long twilight.
